RUAF-IWMI e-mail conference on “Use of Untreated Urban Wastewater in Agriculture in Low Income Countries” MOSQUITO-RELATED HEALTH RISKS OF WASTEWATER TREATMENT PONDS IN PERI-URBAN AREAS OF FAISALABAD, PAKISTAN

چکیده
Pakistan is located in a severe water-scarce zone, which increases the scope of the reuse of wastewater and resultantly it is now being used for irrigation virtually without treatment and restriction in almost all cities. Treatment ponds have been constructed in some cities of Pakistan, but due to financial constraints most of them are in a nonfunctional condition (Aftab, 1999). The irrigation-related ecological changes occurring in Pakistan stimulated us to conduct research on how these changes affect vector breeding and heath risks associated with them. This will then make it possible to plan appropriate management methods for disease vector control. The objective of this study was to investigate the health risks associated with mosquito breeding in a wastewater treatment and irrigation system at a site on the outskirts of Faisalabad, Pakistan.

Wastewater Use in Irrigated Agriculture: Management Challenges in Developing Countries
Cities in developing countries are experiencing unparalleled growth and rapidly increasing water supply and sanitation coverage that will continue to release growing volumes of wastewater. In many developing countries, untreated or partially treated wastewater is used to irrigate the cities’ own food, fodder, and green spaces. Farmers have been using untreated wastewater for centuries, but grea...

Waste stabilisation ponds (WSP) are the preferred method for treatment of urban wastewater in low-income countries but, especially in arid regions, the pond systems can be important breeding sites for mosquitoes of medical importance. In a WSP system in Faisalabad, Pakistan, we assessed the impact of simple environmental interventions on mosquito occurrence and abundance. Reducing the amount of...
متن کاملImplementation of the WHO guidelines for the safe use of wastewater in Pakistan: balancing risks and benefits.
The use of wastewater in agriculture is receiving renewed attention as a result of increasing global water scarcity. Wastewater use potentially poses a risk to public health if not properly managed. In Pakistan the use of wastewater in agriculture is already common, though in most cases its use is unregulated and wastewater untreated. In a four year study in Faisalabad, Pakistan, the risks and ...
متن کاملChallenging Conventional Approaches to Managing Wastewater Use in Agriculture
In developing countries urban wastewater management often fails to cope with increasing wastewater generation. Financial, technical and institutional limitations force authorities to discharge substantial amounts of untreated or partially treated wastewater into surface waters. Consequently, uncontrolled use of polluted water is increasingly common in the downstream peri-urban areas. Although w...
متن کاملDecentralized wastewater management in peri-urban areas in low-income countries
In peri-urban areas in low-income countries, conventional centralized approaches to wastewater management have generally failed to address the needs of communities for the collection and disposal of domestic wastewater and faecal sludges from on-site sanitation. There are opportunities for implementing wastewater management systems based on a decentralized approach that may offer opportunities ...
